When Green Day performed a semi-surprise Lollapalooza aftershow event on Friday at Chicago’s Metro, they unloaded a big helping of rarities, including some songs they haven’t performed in almost 20 years.
Free from the constraints of the Hella Mega Tour leg that recently concluded, where Green Day essentially played the same show roughly 30 times, For their performance on Friday, Billie Joe Armstrong and company combed through their back catalog in order to resurrect classics like Warnings Church on Sunday and that album’s title track.
Green Day also performed fan favorites like Geek Stink Breath, Letterbomb, and J.A.R. that hadn’t been performed live in a half-decade, as well as a trio of Kerplunk! songs, Private Ale, Christie Road, and One of My Lies. The band also played American Idiots Whatsername together for the first time since 2005.
Friday’s performance served as a warm-up for Green Days as well as a stroll down memory lane. Headlining performance at Lollapalooza on Sunday night, followed by another headlining performance at Outside Lands the following weekend in San Francisco.
